Have You Heard?

The time is now! Advocates for Children and Youth has been working hard for the 1.6 million kids in the state of Maryland. We can’t move forward without your help. We’ve created membership circles and are seeking 2,000 community participants to help us by giving monthly to sustain the organization and enable it to meet its mission of building a better ecosystem for each of Maryland’s children.

Your support matters because without it, we cannot continue to successfully advocate for the youth of Maryland for things like:

  • Extending the moratorium on youth exiting foster care during the pandemic
  • Eliminating life sentences without the possibility of parole for youth
  • Requiring the application of equity in policy approaches and funding priorities in revenue legislation
  • Requiring medical professionals to participate in implicit bias training

Without us, the youth of Maryland don’t have a voice and without a voice they aren’t safe.

A Strong Start: Preparing Young Minds

It's August and everyone is preparing for the new school year of virtual or in-person learning. Maryland  has a new State Superintendent of Schools, Mohammed Choudhury (Twitter handle: @moh_choudhury).

The Blueprint for Maryland's Future, the law that provides adequate and equitable funding for schools, is in effect. The funding allocation for COVID-related challenges is available. And education advocates are monitoring the distribution of every single dollar.

To keep everyone up-to-date, we prepared one-pagers for parents, teachers, and students with recommended next steps. Visit our education funding page throughout the year for more information.

PARENTS
Education is the key to improve the lives of our children.  Lawmakers agreed and dedicated significant funding over the next two years to improve both academics and bolster much needed and related supports.

TEACHERS
Each of Maryland's counties is receiving State funding to directly address the inequities that many students face every day.  This funding will change academic instruction and improve how students learn.

STUDENTS
Legislators dedicated significant funding to set students up for success now and in the future.  Maryland's students will receive what they need academically, socially, and emotionally so they can do well.

Your Support Means Our Survival

We need your help to raise $25,000 in 21 days for operations and launching of the 2021-2022 webinar series. As you know, it has been a brutal year financially for many and we're no exception.

By purchasing a $30 ticket to the rebroadcasting of the Leadership and Advocacy Summit, Closing the Gap: Bold Moves to Advance Equity, it will ensure our survival as we continue to address disparities affecting Maryland's children, youth, and families.

Please give today.

When Time is of the Essence...

We're sending text messages to folks who need mission-critical information quick, fast, and in a hurry.  However, to get these messages you have to opt-in by updating your records to include your cell phone number here. We promise not to sell OR share your information. EVER.

Introducing: 1.6 and Counting Podcast

Everyone has something to say whether it is to inform, inspire, or initiate change. So we've launched our podcast, 1.6 and Counting to give people who care about Maryland’s young people, families, and communities an amplified voice so together, we can change things for the better.  It’s about coming together as a community, listening to each other to make sure our children are better than just okay.  You can find 1.6 and Counting on Spotify, Stitcher, and iHeartRadio

Want to know the story behind the name? We invite you to check out our podcast and hear the reason why.

Over the past year, Advocates for Children and Youth's Board of Directors and Staff have been working on refining our approach to advocacy. We shared our mission statement, launched our campaign, Equity for All Kids during the 2020 legislative session, and continue to be responsive and preemptive to the new challenges that the pandemic has either magnified or exposed.

To give you further insight into our progress toward racial equity and inclusion both internally and externally, we are sharing our Strategic FrameworkTheory of Changeand Values.  With these tools in hand, we will work toward building a strong Maryland by advancing policies and programs to ensure children and families of every race, ethnicity, and place of birth achieve their full potential.
